The
goal of the Camden Bangladesh Mela is to maintain an annual
festival in the London Borough of Camden which will:
-
recognise and
celebrate Bangladeshi tradition, creativity and heritage
-
serve and
reflect Bangladeshi audiences in Camden, Greater London and
the UK
-
increase access
to and enjoyment of the arts for a wider community
-
demonstrate
significant involvement of the community in planning and
programming
-
provide
opportunities for local people in training, employment and
participation
-
be imaginative
and inspiring to all local communities in Camden and those
beyond it

The Camden Bangladesh Mela is committed to programming high
quality traditional and contemporary Bangladeshi arts and
crafts. With this programme we also seek to involve, engage and
provide a platform for artists which will increase understanding
of diverse cultural influences and practices. We seek to inspire
and challenge those audiences who have had little exposure to
Bangladeshi culture, and to broaden the creative experiences of
the Bangladeshi community. The event will also foster a sense of
community understanding which will help repair damage done to
community relations by the events of 7/7, using the arts to
challenge perceptions and promote diversity and respect.

The Camden Bangladesh Mela wishes to fully explore and develop
the full potential of the rich cultural mix offered by the local
community.
This will involve:
• Parades in the
Park – colourful processions through Regent’s Park displaying
traditional costumes and crafts
• Main Stage –
displaying a wide variety of traditional music and dance
• Youth Stage –
showcasing the best of young Bangladeshi music and dance talent
and including young people from other cultures and backgrounds
• Involving
Bangladeshi women – wonderful displays of textile and embroidery
panels; designed and created by local women
• Children’s Art
Tent – participatory arts for children – learning and creating
traditional Bangladeshi crafts
• Health Activity
Marquee – offering a range of lifestyle improvement ideas for
the community
